Lehmann Maupin presents Beyond Form, an exhibition that gathers seven artists who explore notions of abstraction: Sanford Biggers, McArthur Binion, Frank Bowling, Lee Bul, Zhang Huan, Angel Otero, and Vaughn Spann. The works on view, which span painting, embroidery, photography, and mixed media, reflect limitless formal possibilities. Beyond Form contests abstraction’s traditional history by invoking content beyond form. Personal and public narratives are present, and the haptic emerges through tactile surfaces and unconventional materials, pushing the limits of abstract materiality to conjure the personal and the communal at once.
