Press Release

The gallery is pleased to open our 2026 exhibition programme with a re-staging of the major mid-career survey of Julian Dashper, Midwestern Unlike You and Me. The original exhibition, curated by Christopher Cook and David Raskin, toured the American Midwest in 2005 and 2006.

Marking the 20th anniversary of this significant moment in Dashper’s career, the exhibition will bring together some 50 works and objects, many of which have not been seen publicly since 2006.

About the Artist

Exploring Modernism in a New Zealand context, Julian Dashper’s work concerns the connections between abstract art and popular culture. Central to his practice is the idea that in New Zealand great Modernist works are known largely through reproduction. Dashper reinterprets and explores artworks regarded by local culture as ‘great’. The Big Bang Theory (1992-93) for instance puts the names of major New Zealand regional artists on drumkits, as though they were rock bands.
