ART BASEL HONG KONG 2017

A central axis of our presentation features abstract painting by celebrated artists AIDA Makoto, YAMAGUCHI Akira, O JUN and HORI Kosai. Complementing their work shall be two large-scale works of figurative painting, by AMANO Yoshitaka (whose career has exerted a formative influence on the development of visual design, anime and manga throughout Japan and beyond over the course of the second half of the 21st century), and OKAMOTO Ellie, whose astonishingly intricate paintings addressing questions of the role of local lore and traditional noh theatre in shaping contemporary society have won high acclaim even as Okamoto was still completing her PhD. studies at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Finally, our booth showcases artists working at the forefront of innovation in visual expression in terms of interpolating their work with influences from contemporary cultural expression and pop culture symbolism. Chinese artist/musician DU Kun’s (b. 1982) oil paintings recall detailed classical Song Dynasty landscapes melded with figures from Chinese rock music. Du describes his exploration of contradictions as akin to contemporary China’s condition of navigating between traditional Buddhist or Confucian values and the impact of Western cultural influence. By contrast, the work of celebrated Indonesian artists’ duo indieguerillas navigates the intertextual relationships between visual art and pop culture, incorporating the classical Indonesia shadow puppetry theatre of wayang as well as the visual iconography of video games.
