Press Release

Pace Gallery is pleased to present Ghost Forest Baseline, an installation of 50 tree sections produced in four unique variations, directly derived from Maya Lin’s monumental installation Ghost Forest, previously on view in Madison Square Park.

During the deinstallation of Ghost Forest, large sections of each tree were set aside and given to Rocking the Boat, an organisation in the south Bronx that teaches teenagers how to make boats. Other, smaller sections were held back by Lin. In collaboration with a skilled woodworker, these sections were then pared down and finished, producing four sets of stool-like wood sections that Lin will organise into a constellation of organic shapes, reminiscent of the original installation.

Ghost Forest was a very important project for Lin on both a professional and personal level. The Baselines were born out of a desire to keep this project alive. In extending the life of these objects, the artist hopes to also extend the important ecological conversation that drove her concept initially and is central to her practice.
