Perrotin is pleased to present dual solo exhibitions of work byDaniel Arsham across Paris and New York, in honor of the artist’s20th anniversary of collaboration with Emmanuel Perrotin. Arshamdebuts multiple series of work that draw inspiration from theevolution of his artistic practice over the past two decades.Renowned for visually transforming cultural objects into subtlyeroding artifacts, Arsham showcases the power of nostalgia byconflating past, present, and future. In the Paris and New Yorkexhibitions, Arsham returns to his oeuvre to examine and reflecton his long-standing appreciation for the complexities ofmateriality and space.
20 Years / 20 Ans juxtaposes works on paper and paintings alongsidelife-size architectural inventions, sculptures carved from geologicalmaterials, handheld objects and beyond. Key highlights include a newcollaboration with Star Wars, featuring the film’s iconic characters inArsham’s signature ‘eroded’ fictional archeological techniques;paintings in a new impasto paint specially developed by Arsham toinvoke the texture of Renaissance masterpieces; a salon-style hangingof never-before-seen sketches on hotel stationery; wall surfacemanipulations bearing motifs of Falling Clocks and Veiled Poems andupdated interpretations of Arsham’s classical antiquity sculptures. Theexhibition continues into the bookstores of Perrotin New York andParis, with Arsham taking over these spaces to mark the launch of anew, coinciding book.
Emmanuel Perrotin says: ‘From the beginning of the gallery, ourmission has been to make artists’ projects possible, giving youngerartists the opportunity to produce their work. I met Daniel when he was22 years old, an emerging artist living in his studio, and I wasimmediately drawn to his incredible talent and distinct vision. Daniel’spractice breaks the boundaries of fine art and exists across industries. As his success has grown, he has been able to keep his practice opento a broad audience, as a leader in editions, collaborations, and awidespread internet presence, which is admirable. It has been apleasure to grow with Daniel, our gallery expanding alongside hiscareer.’
Daniel Arsham says: ‘In this 20th year of collaboration andrepresentation by Emmanuel Perrotin I’ve been taking stock of thejourney I’ve been on. I began as a painter and many of the firstexhibitions that I made with Emmanuel lived in this medium. As myinterests and material palette have expanded the gallery hassupported my work across mediums, disciplines and continents. I’mexcited to unveil this new body of work which furthers my study oftime dislocation and the integration of all my myriad interests. I makethings that I truly want to see exist in the world and I hope that bringsintrospection and joy to others.’
Daniel Arsham’s uchronic aesthetics revolve around his concept of fictional archaeology. Working in sculpture, architecture, drawing and film, he creates and crystallises ambiguous in-between spaces or situations, and further stages what he refers to as future relics of the present. They are eroded casts of modern artifacts and contemporary human figures, which he expertly makes out of some geological material such as sand, selenite or volcanic ash for them to appear as if they had just been unearthed after being buried for ages. Always iconic, most of the objects that he turns into stone refer to the late 20th century or millennial era, when technological obsolescence unprecedentedly accelerated along with the digital dematerialisation of our world. While the present, the future and the past poetically collide in his haunted yet playful visions between romanticism and pop art, Daniel Arsham also experiments with the timelessness of certain symbols and gestures across cultures.
Emmanuel Perrotin founded his first gallery in 1989 at the age of 21. He has opened since then over 17 different spaces, with the aim of continuing to offer increasingly vibrant and creative environments to experience artists work. He has worked closely with his roster of artists, some since more than 25 years, to help fulfil their ambitious dreams and projects.
