SETAREH X is pleased to present the duo exhibition Queen takes King by Anna Nero and Denise Werth. Both artistic positions convince through painterly as well as sculptural sophistication. On closer examination, the colourful works contain objectness and corporeality as well as allusive, ironic and even sexual connotations.
Anna Nero's as well as Denise Werth's works play with the contrast of handwriting and technical perfection, of recognisable ductus and mechanical/digital aesthetics. Denise Werth's objects shown in this exhibition repeatedly suggest a certain functionality with their eyelets and lugs. Anna Nero's paintings subtly alternate between perspective moments, sculptural pictorial elements and intensive colour fields.
The reduction of forms, which today is mostly perceived as post-digital, has already been a topic in the history of art and design in various epochs. Thus, Italian neorealism, Konrad Klapheck's glazes or the design of Memphis Minimal echo in this exhibition and find worthy continuators in the works of Nero and Werth.
The exhibition title, derived from chess jargon, can indeed be understood as a feminist statement and finds a correspondence in the grid structures and titles of Anna Nero's paintings and Denise Werth's sculptures.
