STATION was established in 2011 in Melbourne, Australia with a second space opened in Sydney in 2019. We are dedicated to presenting a diverse, conceptually driven exhibition program and fostering rigorous, critically engaged contemporary art practices. STATION represents a broad stable of established and emerging Australian and international artists. We are committed to bringing Australian contemporary art practices to international audiences and presenting opportunities for our artists to be positioned within a broader global dialogue.
Returning to Frieze Seoul for the third time in 2025, STATION will present a dual presentation with Del Kathryn Barton and Tomislav Nikolic.
Barton’s practice is self-referential, exploring notions of femininity, folklore & the cosmos. Her hyper-detailed paintings combine traditional painting techniques with contemporary design principles to create a cacophony of imagery.
Similarly, Nikolic has a finely tuned ability to express the spirit and power of colour through abstraction. Drawing inspiration from both everyday life and the great masters, Nikolic distils and reinterprets these influences into emotionally resonant works that feel both intimate and expansive. Through the meticulous layering of hundreds of thin, translucent veils of pigment, Nikolic builds complex colour fields that hum with subtle vibrancy.
Both artists convey the spirit and potency of painting through widely different technical approaches to line, colour and composition. This dual presentation demonstrates the strength and diversity of painting in Australian contemporary art.
Nikolic was awarded the Bulgari Art Award, Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2017 and is represented in international collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia; Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, New Zealand; Artbank, Australia; and The Obayashi Collection, Japan. Barton is a two-time Archibald Prize winner represented in major Australian public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, and the National Gallery of Victoria following her retrospective exhibition, The Highway is a Disco.
