The Page Gallery presents Up Against the Walls! from August 26 through October 30, in collaboration with Consortium Museum in Dijon, France. Curated by Consortium Museum Co-Directors Seungduk Kim and Franck Gautherot, the exhibition is the first chapter of a global project linking the museum’s past 50 years with its next 50, as it approaches its 50th anniversary in 2027.
The exhibition brings together nine artists who have worked with Consortium Museum at different moments and in different ways. Each interprets the wall through their own language and draws it into their practice. John Armleder and Sylvie Fleury bring their long-standing investigations of wall-based work into this space. Nathalie Du Pasquier connects geometric wall paintings with small-scale paintings placed upon them as a single composition. Vivien Zhang installs paintings over wallpaper created for the exhibition, while M/M (Paris) fills the corridor linking two exhibition spaces with posters, transforming the passage itself into an image-space. Ugo Rondinone projects moving images of his late partner and fellow artist John Giorno reciting the poem 《thanx 4 nothing》 onto two facing walls, allowing one voice and two images to structure the entire space. Isabella Ducrot’s large-scale paper works, Ángela Ferrari’s monumental triptych, and Jean-Marie Appriou’s sculptures likewise intervene in and enter into dialogue with the walls and space in their own distinct ways, dynamically completing the landscape of the exhibition.
Beginning with the wall as the most fundamental condition of exhibition-making, 《Up Against the Walls!》 reconsiders the relationships among artworks, spaces, and the different agents who make an exhibition possible. Through this project, The Page Gallery seeks to explore structures of collaboration through which exchanges among artists, curators, and different institutions can develop into actual works and exhibitions and continue over time.
