Press Release

This summer, White Cube will present a major group exhibition of contemporary art, hosted by the National Trust in the opulent eighteenth-century interiors of Claydon House and across its extensive grounds.

Located in the Buckinghamshire countryside, Claydon has been home to the Verney family since 1620. Built as a grand statement of the family’s status and wealth, the original house boasts beautifully ornate rooms in the Rococo, Palladian and Chinoiserie style. The home is also notable for its connection to Florence Nightingale, whose sister Parthenope married into the Verney family.

Reflecting 400 years of history, the house bears the traces of rivalry, piracy and war, of nation and empire, built and lost, interwoven throughout with family dramas and personal tragedies. White Cube’s selection of artworks seeks to draw out some of these threads, placing the work of renowned contemporary artists in dialogue with the site’s layered history.

Works by more than 20 artists, including Cai Guo-Qiang, Enrico David, Mona Hatoum, Rachel Kneebone, Danh Vo and Jeff Wall, will be installed in the grand staterooms, the dazzling Black and White Hall, the fantastical Chinese Room, Florence’s bedroom, the museum and the library. Sculptures by Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, Marguerite Humeau, Richard Hunt and Anselm Kiefer, Gabriel Orozco and Virginia Overton will animate the lawns, glasshouses and terraces of the estate
