Yumiko Chiba Associates is delighted to present DO NOT TRUST THE MIRROR, our third exhibition by British artist David Shrigley.Born in England in 1968, Shrigley is currently based in Brighton after working in Glasgow for a long time. Ever-eager to expand hisinternational horizons, Shrigley also staged an exhibition at Art Tower Mito in Ibaragi, Japan, during the 2017-2018 period. In 2020, he wasawarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to the visual arts.
Shrigley first came to attention in the 1990s for the witty drawings rich in black humor that have gone on to define his career, and is known foran impressively diverse practice that ranges from drawings and paintings combining text and image, to sculpture, taxidermy objects, photography, short animations, and installations. As evident in his installations skewering the systems around exhibition of artworks, Shrigleydraws on the intellectual playfulness found in the likes of Marcel Duchamp and conceptual art to create works replete with an upbeatnonsensicality and sense of humor far removed from the air of abstruseness that many see as characterizing contemporary art.
Based on his belief that art is for everyone, Shrigley seems to be striving to open up possibilities for art as common ground for people. Hisworks, which have also been described as childlike, are indeed aimed at all people, including children. Don't miss this chance to experiencethe artistic realm of David Shrigley in all its outside-the-box originality and criticality.
Combining a simple, cartoonish style with hand-rendered text, David Shrigley's drawings, painting, sculptures, and installations extend a range of commentaries on the everyday, from satirical personal observations to political critique.
