Adopting elements of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism, accompanied by graffiti and cartoon-like adaptations, Vasmoulakis makes twisted, hybrid entities. With fragmented forms that skirt the borders between perception and hallucination, the works challenge our projected perceptual realities. In this critique of sensory cognition, inspiration is drawn from Neuroscience, and Gombrich’s assertion of the “Beholder’s Share.” Vasmoulakis throws down the gauntlet - perhaps we’re all hallucinating all of the time so that our notion of reality is a mere consensus on these hallucinations?
Vasmoulakis utilizes an exploratory procedure, exploiting spontaneity and serendipitous changes of direction. Direct drawing on canvas is thus preferred, avoiding initial sketches or preparations. The paintings involve a complex layering process of multiple additions and subtractions. Oil paint and beeswax crayon layers are built up, then partially unveiled, via a scraper and a high-pressure cleaner, leaving visible traces behind.
Vasmoulakis’s recent solo exhibitions include the Afterparty at Eins Gallery in Limassol, Cyprus (2020),Mind Mischief (2017) and T_he Eaters and The Eaten_ (2016) at The Breeder Gallery in Athens, My eyes are seeing you at Art Expertise in Athens (2014), and Figures at Le Basse Projects in Los Angeles (2013). His work has also been included in a wide range of group exhibitions, including at Fondation Cartier (Paris), Antikenmuseum (Basel), Benaki Museum (Athens), and Bozar (Brussels), among others. He lives and works between Athens and Kythnos, Greece, as well as Windsor, United Kingdom.
