Early Years and Background

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1970, Chalayan relocated to London in 1982, following upheaval in his homeland. He completed his BA (Honours) at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 1993, launching his career with a collection that would appear in the window of Browns, an iconic London boutique. Chalayan remains based in London while maintaining a global presence through exhibitions and academic roles.

Hussein Chalayan’s artworks, installations, and designs blur the lines between fashion, performance, and visual art, encompassing garment design, sculpture, video, and immersive environments. Chalayan frequently explores themes of migration, displacement, and identity—rooted in his own experiences—and brings critical attention to cultural hybridity, technology, and society’s shifting definitions of home and belonging. His acclaimed fashion presentations are often conceived as performance artworks, noted for experimental approaches including mechanical dresses, wearable architecture, and thought-provoking use of lighting and sound.

• The Absent Presence (2005): A video installation starring Tilda Swinton, exploring concepts of identity and migration through the metaphor of DNA and clothing. The work was featured in the first Turkish Pavillion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005.
• Imminence of Desire (2011): A sound installation referencing Istanbul‘s layered history via evocative audio and mechanical signage.
• ‘Fake Celebrations’ series (2022-ongoing): Created using flocking on copper and aluminium alloy, these works critique digital isolation and were first shown at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum and PILEVNELİ in Istanbul.

In 2025, Hussein Chalayan was featured at the Royal Academy of Arts’ 257th Summer Exhibition, Burlington House, London (17 June — 17 August 2025). In the exhibition, he presented two works from his ‘Fake Celebrations’series, extending his dialogue between art, fashion, and digital culture. This exhibition is curated around themes of ecology, coexistence, and survival, and continues the Royal Academy’s tradition of amplifying topical conversations in contemporary art.

An exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery in London, titled Dirty Looks: Desire and Decay in Fashion, opened on 25 September featuring Hussein Chalayan’s work. The work on show explores fashion’s engagement with themes of ruination, regeneration, and the aesthetics of imperfection, including an important installation of Chalayan’s buried, oxidised dresses first presented in his 1993 graduate collection, The Tangent Flows. Chalayan’s practice of burying clothing with iron filings, symbolising cycles of decay and renewal, is highlighted as a conceptual foundation within the exhibition’s narrative on ‘future archaeology’ and timelines of making and unmaking in contemporary fashion.
