In a bid to tackle the growing issue of galleries previewing and placing works before they ever make it to fairs, Art Basel has launched Basel Exclusive, a new initiative that it hopes will capitalise on the current trend for the in-person appreciation of art.
A sizeable list of galleries have agreed not to include selected major works in pre-show preview documents and online viewing rooms, instead revealing them to an in-real-life audience at Art Basel’s First Choice VIP preview event on 16 June, ahead of the fair’s opening on 18 June.
Speaking to Ocula, Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s chief artistic officer and global director of fairs, said: “The idea emerged through ongoing conversations with our galleries over the past years. Together, we’ve been reflecting on how the market has evolved—particularly the fact that works are often previewed, and sometimes even placed, before a fair opens.
“At the same time, we’re seeing a renewed emphasis on in-person experience... Basel Exclusive is a joint response to that shift: it’s about re-centring the fair as the moment of first encounter and bringing back a sense of immediacy, anticipation and discovery.”
Each participating gallery will unveil one work. Around 70 percent of galleries in the main section have so far confirmed their participation, including Hauser & Wirth, Pace Gallery, Gagosian, David Zwirner, Sadie Coles HQ and Lévy Gorvy Dayan.
“In conversations with galleries and collectors, the importance of in-person experience and discovery continues to come through very clearly,” de Bellis told Ocula.
This is reflected in data from the Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report 2026, showing that art fairs account for 35 percent of dealer sales, while online sales have stabilised at a lower level. de Bellis also cited Art Basel and UBS Global’s Survey of Global Collecting, which he said highlighted that younger collectors expressed a preference for in-person buying.
“Basel Exclusive responds to this by reinforcing the value of being present at the fair,” de Bellis said, “creating moments of genuine discovery and ensuring that collectors, institutions and visitors encounter works in real time in a way that cannot be replicated elsewhere.”
