Artists Jordan Casteel and Oscar Murillo rub shoulders with musician Rina Sawayama, Everything Everywhere All at Once directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, and U.S. Treasury Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo on this year’s TIME100 Next list.
‘What unites these individuals are their extraordinary efforts to shape our world—and to define our future,’ TIME said.
Born in Denver, Colorado, Casteel paints portraits of friends, family, and strangers in New York, where she now lives. The magazine attributed her rapid rise to ‘the intimate connections she forges within and across social worlds, through fluid brushwork that balances poetry and precision.’
‘Beyond proud and honoured to be included in the 2022 #TIME100NEXT list,’ Casteel posted on her Instagram.
‘It’s especially crazy beautiful to be included with two people who were some of the first to say “yes” to me painting them at Yale School of Art,’ she continued, tagging actors Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Majors.
Casteel’s solo exhibition In bloom continues at Casey Kaplan in New York until 22 October.
Oscar Murillo, TIME notes, began drawing in earnest after moving from Colombia to London as a kid. ‘Decades on and with a Turner Prize ... under his belt, among other accolades, the artist still incorporates glimmers of those early years in his style, defined in part by abstract patchworks of colour and bold, frenetic lines,’ they said.
Murillo is currently presenting the exhibition, A Storm Is Blowing From Paradise, at Scuola Grande della Misericordia in Venice until 27 November.
The show also includes Murillo’s ongoing Frequencies project, which has seen tens of thousands of blank canvases sent to schools around the world for students to fill with drawings and words.
In addition to their TIME100 Next list, the magazine publishes TIME100, an annual list of the 100 most influential people. This year, that list included artists Faith Ringgold, Nan Goldin, and Maya Lin, alongside actor Zendaya, comedian Pete Davidson, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. —[O]
