Paris+ par Art Basel, the fair that outbid FIAC for a coveted booking at the Grand Palais, has announced 156 galleries for their inaugural event.
That number is slightly down from the more than 160 galleries FIAC presented at the Grand Palais Éphémère last year, and almost 200 they showed at the Grand Palais in 2019, but there is ample room for the new fair to grow.
Fair director Clément Delépine told The Art Newspaper that this year’s 156 galleries were whittled down from ‘four to five times the amount’ of applicants. He said that as many as 50% more galleries could be accommodated in 2024 when the fair moves from the Grand Palais Éphémère to its permanent home at the Grand Palais, which is currently being restored.
‘Our vision for Paris is to create an event of global stature with close ties to its creative and cultural industries – from fashion and design to film and music – to create an event that radiates throughout the city and is firmly embedded in Paris and its cultural scene,’ Clement told Ocula Magazine.
Paris+ par Art Basel will be more international than French, with just 61 exhibitors having permanent spaces in France.
Leading global galleries such as Gagosian, Pace, Hauser & Wirth, David Zwirner, and White Cube are all attending.
Eighteen galleries are exhibiting at Art Basel for the first time, including Paris galleries Galerie Anne Barrault, Christian Berst Art Brut, Magnin-A, Michel Rein, Salle Principale, and We Do Not Work Alone. Other Art Basel debutantes from around the world include Efremidis (Berlin), Galerie Cécile Fakhoury (Abidjan), Heidi (Berlin), seventeen (London), and Chris Sharp Gallery (Los Angeles).
Galleries who recently showed at FIAC but are not participating in Paris+ par Art Basel 2022 this time around include: Ben Brown Fine Arts (London), Blum & Poe (Los Angeles), SCAI The Bathhouse (Tokyo), STPI (Singapore), Vitamin Creative Space (Guangzhou), and Venus Over Manhattan (Los Angeles).
