Home to little figures in boats, tree-lined paths, and low-hanging suns that bathe landscapes in hot hues, the richly coloured paintings of Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900–1995) capture life in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
David Zwirner in Hong Kong presents the first solo exhibition of Lorenzato’s work in Asia, on view from 12 September to 9 November 2024.
A largely self-taught artist, Lorenzato was generally unknown outside of Brazil during his lifetime. Yet he built a remarkable oeuvre illustrating everyday scenes, beautifully portraying the colours and textures of his homeland. Many of his paintings depict favelas, semi-urban landscapes, and agricultural scenes that highlight rural industry.
The two landscapes Sem título (Untitled) (1980–89) and Sem título (Untitled) (1972) show off Lorenzato’s expressive patterns and distinctive textures created with brushes and unconventional tools like combs or forks, as well as a lush palette derived from paints he made from mineral pigments.
Lorenzato’s work is currently showing at the 60th Venice Biennale, running until 24 November 2024.
