Xavier Hufkens have just re-opened their flagship space at 6 rue St-Georges in Brussels, marking the gallery’s 35th anniversary.
A selection of paintings, bronze and wire sculptures, and photographs by Christopher Wool have been brought together for the inaugural exhibition. It is also Wool’s first comprehensive solo show in Europe.
Spanning four floors, the exhibition traces the American artist’s recent work, inspired by the desolate landscapes of West Texas. Sparse, abstract forms recall these landscapes, along with his works’ subtle earthy tones.
Wool attended the New York Studio School in the 1970s, becoming embedded in the city’s underground scene and experimenting in film for a brief period. After working as a studio assistant to sculptor Joel Shapiro, he returned to painting, and has continued to push the boundaries of abstraction ever since.
