Genesis Tramaine—a recent participant in Rubell Museum’s coveted residency programme alongside Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe—opened a show at Almine Rech‘s New York space last week.
The self-taught painter’s complex visages are infused with the graffiti mannerisms of Basquiat as well contemporaries Aboudia and Joyce Pensato, yet imbued with an evangelical purpose, stemming from her love of community church music and Southern Baptist beliefs.
Genesis Tramaine’s exhibition Break of Day is on view until 23 April.
