Press Release

Anat Ebgi is pleased to announce Good Company: The Remix, a reimagining of our inaugural exhibition at 6150 Wilshire Blvd. The exhibition is co-organised by Anat Ebgi, Paul Schimmel, and Stefano Di Paola and will be on view from 6 February–6 March 2021.

_The Remix _features work by eight new artists including Midnight Snack, by Marisa Adesman, a surreal painting of a twisting ribbon-like fork hatching a ball of light. Rooted in close botanical observation, Martin Basher's highly stylised still life painting of shockingly beautiful, visually sharp birds of paradise evokes visions of dystopian futures. Photographs by Chris Coy depict his original 3D rendering of Jean-Honoré Fragonard's The Swing, ghostly white marble foliage reveal the artifice of the lush rococo garden. Alannah Farrell's painting Ginger and Mae features a couple—friends of the artist—and captures the private interiority and intimacy of young lovers as contrasted with the hazy new york-scape visible through the window.

Caleb Hahne's works radiate with light—from glasses of water to a portrait of a woman gazing from a window—his subjects emanate a dreamy glow. An Te Liu borrows from and transforms consumer objects beyond their utilitarian origins, imbuing them with new lyrical narratives. Joshua Petker's combination of complementary cobalt blue and cadmium red provokes in the tightly cropped painting Purple Corner; suggestive of a much larger scene, stockinged feet relax after a party or rest before a day of work. Vibrant paintings of Christian Ruiz Berman weave personal histories of migration with a range of culturally specific symbols and architectures into a dense collage of pattern, figure, and abstraction.

Paul Schimmel is an independent curator and art historian of contemporary art, formerly the Chief Curator for nine years at the Newport Harbor Art Museum (now the Orange County Museum of Art), Chief Curator for 22 years at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, and Founding Partner of Hauser Wirth & Schimmel. Paul has organized and written the catalogue for the exhibition, Sigmar Polke Photoworks: When Pictures Vanish, and contributed to the catalogue of Bruce Nauman's comprehensive MoMA retrospective in 1995. Most recently, he wrote for the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton as well as Kazuo Shiraga exhibition at the Amagasaki City Culture Promotion Foundation.
