According to Frank Swain, a science writer for a number of notable media such as BBC and MIT Technology Review, the multiverse is ‘the hypothetical set of all universes’, compromising the existence of space, time, matter, energy, and information. One thought that comes to mind when we think about the other universes is ‘what might be possible there?’
Growing up as one of the ‘television kids’ of the mid-1960s, Kenny Scharf experienced the joy of animated shows such as The Flintstones and The Jetsons, portraying possibilities of the past and the future. And at the same time, he experienced the military tensions of the Cold War. That experience became one of the earliest inspirations in Scharf’s artistic practice: the playful and colorful visuals in his works also reflects an ambiguous nature of contemporary society.
A photograph and a sculpture are two very different formats of art. One is flat and the other is three-dimensional. One is a printed piece of paper and the other is made of heavy materials. Can it be otherwise? Gwon Osang challenges what we consider ‘the general knowledge’ of how artworks are made by combining the contradictory essence of photography and sculpture.
Eddi Prabandono’s practice started before the Reformasi, thus coloured with elements of terror, violence, and militarism. After 30 years, those pressures subsided and he decided to start afresh. ‘I want my art to be a spectacle for the viewer. It should be funny, entertaining, and even stupid to those who see it.’ This is reflected in the absurd visuals, how Eddi injects movement onto still objects: extended and twisted yet remained unanimated.
Combining his interest in the connection between technology and human life with his visual inspiration from science fiction, hardcore humour, and comic/graphic novel aesthetic, Dwicky visualised an imaginary universe. The narratives came from his daily life, as mundane as the pain of dental braces led to how to turn that pain into a huge energy to fight.
BAIK ART Jakarta is pleased to present MULTIVERSE, featuring four artists who challenge the general norms and values through their art practices, sharing possibilities from each of their own universes.

In November 2022, BAIK ART opened its third location in Jakarta, Indonesia, with the inaugural exhibition titled Tumpeng. This new expansion can be traced back to BAIK ART’s residency exchange programme with Indonesian arts institutions and artists and aims to deepen a dialogue between Indonesian and global art scenes.
