ANDRÉ HEMER

In Day Paintings, André Hemer explores the relationship between digital media and painting, between materiality and form. In dusky tones and silky hues of peach, Hemer builds layered surfaces combining scanning techniques with printed and painted gestures. In this series, painted objects were scanned outdoors, picking up a sense of the atmospheric conditions in which they were captured. Hemer comments “They always have this lineage of a certain time and place and I’m sort of interested in working with that initial constraint, even if it’s not apparent in the final work in a representational way.” Lucinda Bennett comments in the recent Art Collector magazine, “To talk to Hemer about his practice is primarily to talk process, for in his work all conceptual concerns are almost indistinguishable from the way a painting is made.”
