A leading figure of Tansaekhwa (the Korean Monochrome Movement), Ha Chonghyun (b. 1935, Sancheong, Korea) is best known for his practice of pushing paint through the back of thickly woven stretched canvas, smearing it across the front of the canvas as it appears through the gaps in the weave. He has been highly praised for his manipulation of the materiality of paint and his incorporation of the canvas structure into the creation of his works.
Ha graduated from Hongik University in 1959. From 1990 to 1994 he served as Dean of the Fine Arts College of the same university, and in 2000, was granted an honorary Ph.D. Ha has had numerous successful solo shows internationally, including at Blum & Poe, NY, USA (2014); National Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Korea (2012); and Severance Art Space, Seoul, Korea (2010).
Ha currently lives and works in Seoul.
