Martin Browne Contemporary is delighted to present a new exhibition of paintings by Cornelia Tipuamantumirri and her daughter Delores Tipuamantumirri. Cornelia and Delores live at Pirlamgimpi – or Garden Point- on the North Western corner of Melville Island and are masters of the “pwoja” the traditional Tiwi hardwood comb. The Tiwi use this comb to create their emblematic patterns to transcribe the impressions of their own world views. Both artists work at Munupi, the distinctive Tiwi Art Centre that developed through a unique history its own style of painting, traditional carving, print-making and a historically famous pottery.
Cornelia Tipuamantumirri’s paintings are mostly inspired by the effect of tides on the coastal landscape of Pirlangimpi, on the west coast of Melville Island in the Northern Territory. She paints traditional Tiwi Jilamara (designs), using a distinctive and highly developed style to emulate the movement of waves lapping at the shore.
Delores Tipuamantumirri is the only child of respected elders Steven and Cornelia Tipuamantumirri. Like her mother, Delores Tipuamantumirri uses the traditional tiwi comb (kayimwagakimi) for her painting, applying natural ochre tones to linen, creating a moving ripple effect suggesting a thrown fishing net.
