P21 is pleased to present An Angel Whispers, a solo exhibition by Heemin Chung from May 10th to June 30th, 2019. Chung strives to understand the meaning of painting in the digital age and the relation between the traditional media and the new media as she explores the characteristics of the images produced in the digital environment and the way we experience them. The images in the screen are becoming more and more lifelike, but the way we experience them is by touching the surface of cold glass screen only. Chung's new body of works in the exhibition accentuates the sense of touch to approach the issue of the sensory dissonance and deprivation resulting from the limited experience between the real and the virtual world. By superimposing disparate moments such as lumpy paints flowing down without any obvious pattern, squashed fruits as if sealed inside the painting, a shiny surface that does not feel warm, and a hollow name that remained instead of image, Chung continues her investigation about the tactile sensation which is instinctive but missing in the digital environment.
