Pilar Corrias is pleased to present A MILLION RABBIT HOLES, Rirkrit Tiravanija’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. For the past 30 years, Tiravanija has been at the forefront of conducting a collective dimension for contemporary art. Known for producing participatory installations that engage viewers in communal rituals and activities – such as preparing and eating meals or playing ping pong – he works across a wide variety of media, including music, video, photography and assemblage. A MILLION RABBIT HOLES is an immersive environment that reflects the febrile atmosphere of American politics in the lead up to another Presidential election this autumn. Entering the downstairs gallery, viewers are surrounded by a wallpaper that features a roadside woodlot amid a forested landscape in upstate New York. Hanging atop the wallpaper are four brass-plated stencils with slogans that reflect the atmosphere of political debate in America: A DIFFERENT KIND OF NOTHING, REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER, A MILLION RABBIT HOLES, and HAPPINESS IS NOT ALWAYS FUN. A purple carpet, covered in piles of loose firewood, extends the photograph’s scenery into the gallery environment. As members of the exhibition’s temporary community, visitors are encouraged to circulate in the space and engage in open conversation.
Hugo Boss Prize-winning contemporary artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is one of the foremost artists working with social interaction and activation. His communal, participatory approach and pioneering relational asesthetics have seen galleries and museums transformed into social environments.
