Press Release

Sabrina Amrani is pleased to present Raíces Secundarias, the second solo show by Gabriela Bettini in the gallery.

In Raíces Secundarias, Gabriela Bettini investigates the relationship between colonialism and neoliberalism in Latin America, in which the personal and the social are indiscernible. Her work reflects on the technologies of the gaze and of representation through an exploration through the story of her own biography, marked by the Argentine military dictatorship. Raíces Secundarias proposes a journey from the past to the present, and between the natural environment and her body, where the landscape and the artist’s family memories are intertwined.

As if it were an installation, this exhibition traces an itinerary with two frequencies, of an immersive nature. The contemplation of the paintings is intimately linked to the reading of Bettini’s texts, brought together in a publication made especially for this exhibition. Images and words, paintings and texts, invite us to consider how, if art is capable of changing the interpretation of reality for those who look at it, it can also intervene in history.

About the Artist

Her current interests lie in the study of the first cultural colonialisation and how it relates to its present-day legacy. Using the history of painting and the representation of landscape as her point of departure – observing how this medium has been used to reinforce the ideas that form the basis of Western hegemony – she analyses today’s environmental crisis and the extractivist model it espouses, one where women become a paradigm of the multiple violence inflicted by climate change.
