It is with great pleasure that Yumiko Chiba Associates presents a two-person exhibition focusing on Horiuchi Masakazu, an artist who made an important mark on the history of abstract sculpture in Japan before and after World War II, and Tomii Motohiro, a leading figure in contemporary Japanese sculpture.
This exhibition, following on from an earlier solo show at the gallery that assembled Horiuchi’s sculptures, sketches, and related documents, focuses on the artist’s works. The exhibition was curated by Tomii, who is also showing his own work in this two-person exhibition.
Tomii’s sculptures are primarily made up of “concrete things” – i.e., daily necessities and other readymade articles. By combining these elements, he extracts abstract forms from the objects’ lines, planes, and other aspects that would otherwise be unthinkable. Then, by developing them in a vivid manner, the artist creates sculptures that are imbued with a uniquely abstract quality.
Viewers are invited to observe the interactions and dialogues that emerge between the two artists as they view the abstract work of the late Horiuchi, a pioneering sculptor from the modern to the contemporary era, displayed alongside Tomii’s sculpture.
