Akos Birkas Biography

Akos Birkas was born on October 26, 1941 in Budapest, Hungary. From 1959 to 1965 he studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Budapest, Hungary, and in 1966 he took on a teaching position at the College of Fine and Applied Arts, Budapest, Hungary, which he carried out until 1984. In the beginning, Akos Birkas painted a series of portraits and self-portraits, existentially deeply felt oval images, and tried to escape the predetermined realism of the academy, which allowed no alternatives. These abstract portraits are today among the most significant works of Hungarian artists since 1970.

Between 1970 and 1979 Birkas devoted himself to conceptual photography. The result was photographic self-portraits that are not without self-irony. In 1980, he returned to painting and spent several months in the United States. In 1986 he participated in the 42nd Venice Biennale and populated the Hungarian pavilion. In the early 1990s we met Akos Birkas and we were honoured to accompany his life and work since. This was followed by teaching assignments as a professor at the summer academies in Salzburg, Austria and La Gomera, Tenerife, as well as at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

Akos Birkas's works are among important private and public collections. A significant part of his works is owned by the Ludwig Museum Collection (Vienna and Budapest). In 2006, a first retrospective was shown at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest.
