Barbara Steinman Biography

Throughout her career, Barbara Steinman has worked with diverse media (neon, photography, video, installation).

Her work has been recognized with a Governor General of Canada’s Visual and Media Arts Award (2002); a citation for design excellence for an outdoor art commission in Vancouver (1998); art commissions including the new Canadian Embassy in Berlin (2005); and the new Canadian Embassy in Moscow (awarded in 2010).

Steinman’s multidisciplinary works have been exhibited in numerous galleries, museums and public spaces notably the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York; Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sopha in Madrid; Art Institute of Chicago; Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.

Steinman’s video installations were shown in Japan at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo (1985), at the Fukui Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts in the 2nd Fukui International Video Biennale (1988), and in Spirits on the Crossing (1995) that traveled to the Setagaya Art Museum (Tokyo), National Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto) and Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art (Sapporo).

Barbara Steinman lives and works in Montreal, Canada. Her work is represented by galleries in Montreal, Toronto and Paris.
