Basir Mahmood graduated in 2010 with a BA in Fine Arts, holding a distinction from Beaconhouse National University Lahore, Pakistan. He received a yearlong fellowship from Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany (2011); was a resident at GASWORKS, London (2013); Sacatar Instituto in Bahia, Brazil (2014); Rijksakademie Residency, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2016 - 2017).

Besides being part of various private collections, Mahmood’s video works were acquired by the Queensland Art Gallery collection in Brisbane, Australia. He is the recipient of the 18th Contemporary Art Festival Videobrasil Prize in São Paulo, Brazil (2013) and received the Videobrasil Residency Prize at Sacatar Instituto as part of the award. He was most recently shortlisted for the Abraaj Group Art Prize, Dubai, UAE (2016).
