Indonesian artist/architect Eko Prawoto has his own studio and teaches at the Duta Wacana University in Yogyakarta. Prawoto studied with Y.B Mangunwijaya, an Indonesian architect who was awarded with the Aga Khan Award.
As an architect, he is used to working with space and dimension, as an extension of human needs. Now he is using these concepts in a more intimate, personal way as a visual artist. Using natural, often rustic materials such as straw and bamboo, and harnessing the spatial, cultural and historic resonances of the locations he works with, Prawoto creates monumental structures which transform the familiar, often pedestrian sites they occupy into poetic spaces for contemplation, discovery, and transformation. His installations have been exhibited internationally, including presentations at the 2002 Gwangju Biennale as well as in Australia, Europe and Japan, and commissions by the Esplanade (Singapore) in 2011 and 2012.
