Having dabbled in sculpture and calligraphy, FloRéto is primarily known as a painter using acrylic on canvas, occasionally incorporating oil paint, ink,or wood panels. As a French national but long-time resident of Shanghai, FloRéto’s works relate to her position as an integrated foreigner in China. Inspired by traditional Chinese culture, symbols, and themes, her artwork reflects these motifs while also evocative of her disconnect from them, often appropriating Chinese characters in abstracted or reimagined form. Focusing on depth of color, line, and material texture, FloRéto’s latest series is inspired by the darkness and beauty of the night, capturing Shanghai’s nightly transformation into neon lights against dark skies, where the tallest towers become bridges between the moon and earth. Inspired by China’s enigmatic allure, FloRéto expresses the beauty of her surroundings as well as her perception of them.
