Born in New Jersey in 1926, Wimberley identifies with Abstract Expressionism, a movement establised more than sixty years ago in the New York studios of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. He attended Harvard University where he studied with James Wells, James Porter and Lois Mailou Jones. Wimberley descirbes his practice as a “controlled accident”- creating overwhelming compositions of colour, depth, and texture by applying paint shade by shade, brushstroke by brushstroke. His paintings, often large in scale, demand an emotional response from the viewer. He has held solo exhibitions at the Spanierman Modern and has featured in many group exhibitions predominantly in New York including at The Parrish Art Museum in Southhampton and also at the Spanierman Modern in New York. He was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Grant for 1998.
