GREG JOHNS
Greg Johns is one of Australia's most important contemporary sculptors. His primary material is corten steel; he also works in stainless steel and wood.
Johns began working as a sculptor in 1978, since when his practice has evolved through a search for a visual vernacular that is reflective of and sensitive to the particularity of Australian spaces. Much of his practice over the past twenty years has been informed by an acute awareness of the indigeneity of place, and a growing empathy for the special connection that Indigenous Australians have to the land. Throughout his career, Johns' research has been defined by his quest to understand the interconnectedness of people to the place and cosmos around them, across cultures and throughout time.
For Johns, his response to his environment is as much about feeling as seeing. His work is a performative act, as well as restorative.
Johns is extensively represented in public, corporate and private collections and commissions around the world.
