Julião Sarmento Biography

Julião Sarmento draws upon themes of memory, sexuality, transgression, morality, and duality. In a technique similar to that used in literature, with multiple strands of narratives separated by characters, space and time, Sarmento often connects different individual elements with references to literature, art history or photography to create mysterious visual worlds.

Julião Sarmento lives and works in Estoril, Portugal. He has participated in Documenta (Kassel, 1987 and 1982) and two editions of La Bienniale di Venezia (Venice, 2001 and 1997), in addition to several other exhibitions. Recent notable solo shows include; Without, CGAC Centro Galego de Arte Contemporáneo, (Santiago de Compostela, 2018); La chose, même - The real thing, Fondation Calouste Gulbenkian, (Paris, 2016); MAMAC - Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, (Nice, 2014); Una forma extrema de privacidad, Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil (Mexico City, 2013); White Nights, Museu Serralves (Porto, 2012); Artist Room, Tate Modern (London, 2010); and Grace under Pressure, Estação Pinacoteca (São Paulo, 2009).
