Lin Weixiang Biography

Lin Weixiang (林伟祥) is a Chinese artist born in Guangdong Province in 1982. He graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and is well-known for his works that combine existing fabrics with acrylic painting. Working on patterned fabric, Lin Weixiang destructs the material’s original designs through cloth collage and the addition of color and paint to create splendidly narrative scenes of figures and concrete things, or more abstract designs. Recurring motifs include landscapes with forests, lakes, and luxuriant flora, which are inspired by the artist’s surroundings in his home province of Guangdong, with its subtropical climate, rainforests, and mountainous terrain. His works often include a sense of humor and humanity, capturing nature’s flourishes with a sense of energy that is warm and humid yet quiet and relaxed. By painting directly on the surface of fabric with existing pattern and color, Lin Weixiang creates additional texture and further possibility in his artwork.

Lin Weixiang has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, New York, and Guangzhou, and his works will be featured in Shanghai’s Art in the City Festival in September 2015. His works have been published in a number of magazines such as LEAP and Guangzhou’s Southern Weekly.
