MEG WILLIAMS

Meg Williams Biography

Objects can take on a loaded presence if you really look at them, especially when they are removed from their usual context. Toys often appear in my work and I like to light them as though they are on stage. Their shadows contribute to the composition and add a suggestion of drama to their little lives.

If the painting is to have any resonance its subjects must be chosen for their subliminal appeal. This requires cultivating a good relationship with your instincts and, paradoxically, not thinking too directly about what to choose. I spend many days trying to settle on the right things. But then again, sometimes I just paint something because it makes me laugh.
