Cornish’s work examines the way in which abstract painting has evolved alongside digital and screen-based life; battling with constant visual stimuli, ready-made images and the expectation of instant access and immediate gratification. The painterly languages formed within Cornish’s oil paintings reference that of her Modernist precursors, with her paintings employing refreshed concepts.
“I begin my paintings with no preconceived idea of a finished work, but through the simple act of mark making, with each mark leading on from the last. My gestures reference the techniques of my Modernist precursors, within the digital and screen based world that I have grown up in as a young painter. My ipad is my composition tool, allowing me to consider the innumerous paths that each painting could follow.” - Nyah Isabel Cornish, Artist Statement (2015)
