Tracy Harris Biography

Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, Tracy Harris grew up in Dallas, Texas. She attended Southern Methodist University, receiving a BFA in 1980 and an MFA in 1983. Since 1992 she has lived in East Hampton, New York.

Her encaustic paintings are embedded with buried images. Fields of translucent color and pattern are built up by fusing multiple layers of molten beeswax and pigment. Surfaces are scraped and incised to reveal figures and motion beneath the surface.

Ms. Harris' repertoire of forms mutate endlessly, depicting possibilities of generation and transformation. The transformative role of memory in perception, and as an undercurrent in the drawing process, is a recurring theme in her work.

She has received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and awards from several organizations, including the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas, and Guild Hall Museum in East Hampton, New York.

Her work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, The Amarillo Museum of Art, The Telfair Museum in Savannah, Georgia, The Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, and numerous corporate and private collections.
