Xie Jingsi (谢竟思) has constructed a pristine composition of Arcadia (2016) that, from a distance, appears as a carefully structured rock garden. Yet, upon careful inspection, the rocks serve as demarcated boundaries filled with both natural elements and artificial detritus of human civilization. Microbes and insects proliferate in the same space as the rockery and architecture to reveal the complex symbiosis between nature and the man-made. It is an imaginary and phantasmal world of collapsed cities that are created and recreated, not through physical structures, but with the spiritual and creative yearnings that the artist envisions.
