Australian artist Imants Tillers has been awarded Latvia’s highest state honour for his enduring engagement with his own Latvian heritage throughout his artistic career.
Latvian president Edgars Rinkēvičs will present the artist with the Order of Three Stars at a ceremony at Riga Castle on 4 May—an award bestowed for meritorious service to the Baltic state since 1924.
Tillers, born in Australia to Latvian refugee parents, has incorporated Baltic themes into his work, exploring the complex legacies of displacement, migration, and identity.
Reflecting on the honour, Tillers said he feels a responsibility to tell the story of his parents.
‘Their experience, as well as that of so many others around the world, of being displaced, affected the rest of their lives in myriad ways.’
Tillers’ work was previously the subject of a major retrospective at the Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga. —[O]
