Two influential women artists linked to the French art scene have received awards at the ninth annual contemporary art prize ceremony for Paris-based non-profit, Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions (AWARE).
Tsuneko Taniuchi received the Outstanding Merit prize, awarded to an artist with over 40 years of work, alongside a EUR 10,000 grant. Taniuchi, who has been based in Paris since 1987, is renowned for her norm-challenging participatory ‘Micro-events’. Her monograph will later be published in collaboration with Manuella Éditions.
Meanwhile, the Nouveau Regard prize, aimed at mid-career artists, was awarded to Gabrielle Manglou, a multidisciplinary installation artist from La Réunion. Manglou will receive a residency in New York in 2026 and a solo exhibition in France upon her return.
The prize winners were selected by jury members: Béatrice Salmon, director of the Centre national des arts plastiques; Sandra Patron, director of the Musée d’art Contemporain de Bordeaux; Lourdes Mendez Perez, feminist anthropologist at the Universidad del País Vasco; Gaëtane Verna, executive director of the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio; curator and researcher Chương-Đài Võ; artist and former AWARE recipient Esther Ferrer, and AWARE director Camille Morineau.
The institution has formed extensive collaborations with the Centre Pompidou, Asia Art Archive, Indonesian Visual Art Archive, Njabala Foundation, Independent Curators International, and Fondation Cartier. —[O]
