During Frieze Week, London is packed to the brim with hundreds of exhibitions, events, late openings, and private views championing the best in art. One of this year’s highlights is Justin Caguiat‘s exhibition, Dreampop (9 October–4 November 2023), at Modern Art.
Caguiat, who is known for his swirling arrays of colour that cascade over unframed canvas and linen surfaces, brings a new body of work to the gallery’s Helmet Row space in east London.
Drawing from an ever-shifting repository of European and Japanese painting traditions, the New York-based artist paints vast compositions that showcase pointillist motifs and natural shapes in a kaleidoscopic palette. His mesmerising paintings recall the work of Swedish artist Hilma af Klint.
In May 2022, Caguiat’s painting, to the approach of beauty its body is fungible (2020), sold for U.S. $787,400—three times its high pre-sale estimate—at Sotheby’s The Now Evening Auction, marking him a young artist to follow in the coming years.
