We are excited to invite you to Maru quiñonero's First Solo Exhibition at our Turó Park Gallery. The show brings together a body of work developed in the last few years by the artist, bringing together different materials unused by the artist before presented masterfully, and for the first time, in a formal way.
Positioning herself away from her comfort zone, this new series of work truly embodies Maru's profound interest in the importance of the materials and how they convey a message in themself. The exhibition explores materials such as oil, paper, resin and pastel on over 17 works of various formats and colour, which all convey the same message: the importance of materials and of the present moment, almost as a meditative process in the artistic practice. We will be happy to welcome you all to our gallery, where the artist will be signing the copies of her book and where she will be able meet all the attendees.
'Some ideas need some rest. And so do some colours. I started this project more than three years ago, but I left it in the middle because it wasn't the right time. Everything in my work evolved around two fundamental elements: volume and colour. So, I wanted to play with different surfaces; the dry chalk of the pastel pencils, the matte and light-coloured paint on canvas, and the polished and transparent almost ethereal of methacrylate. It was an exercise closer to collage than painting itself, a game of contrasts that pursued the impulse and the need to work with hands. To move and try to put pieces together, like a puzzle. Now it seems to me that this experiment of corporeality, the one of these figures, stops everything. I feel that its stillness fills the work more than ever. They seem more still. But less heavy. Because these colours, soft, powdery, natural and warm, manage to elevate the mood to a state of mind full of peace. Now I know I have recognised the shapes I was looking for. And the colours have arrived. They were already there, but I couldn't find them. It was not the right moment.'
