Double Square Gallery was established in 2015 in Taipei with a mission to promote an uncompromising and imaginative presentation of contemporary Taiwanese and international art. Located in Zhongshan district, known for its historical buildings and museums, the gallery derives its name from the two rectangular exhibition spaces. ‘Double Square’ also references the gallery’s philosophy—to explore the contrasting, but not exclusive, poles of artist/viewer, local/international, and exhibition/public, among others.Read More
Double Square Gallery Artists
Double Square Gallery represents more than 20 artists working across Taiwan and abroad. On the gallery roster are the pioneering abstractionists Li Chun-Shan, who has been an influential figure of Taiwanese modern and contemporary art since his relocation from China to Taiwan since 1949, and Wu Tung-Lung, renowned for his exploration of minimalist patterns, lines, and colour.
Artists represented by Double Square Gallery engage with both traditional and new media in unique ways, such as Shyu Ruey-Shiann’s ‘mechanical power’ series, ongoing since 1997, that juxtaposes mechanical parts with simplistic and repetitive aesthetics; Hong Kong-born, Italy-based Cynthia Sah’s elegant sculptures that can be found in public spaces around the world; and Hsu Yungshu’s ceramic works known for their impressively thin lines that create cavities in the large sculpture.
The quotidian yet complex nature of life is at the core of interests for such artists as Huang Hai-Hsin, who captures the quirky moments in daily life in her photographs; Su Hui-Yu, whose videos examine the bidirectional relationship between the viewer and media; and Sunil Gwade, who investigates the paradox of life through his kinetic installations, sculptures, and paintings.
