Over an 18-month period, Alec Von Bargen travelled to MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières, or Doctors Without Borders) organisations around the world, shooting portraits of people and places embroiled in long-term conflicts. These photos are collected in his project, So.lil.o.quy (2015–2019).
About the Artist
Born in New York City and educated in Mexico and the United Kingdom, Alec Von Bargen uses photography as the point of departure for his installations and multimedia works. He chooses not to stage, light, or otherwise prepare a subject before photographing, preferring to sustain a more immediate relationship with the world.
In recent years the artist has exhibited at the 54th and 56th Venice Biennales, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, OCAT Shanghai, and Les Rencontres D’Arles in France. His work has won awards including the 2017 International Fine Art Photographer Award in Paris, the 2018 International Photography Awards, the 2018 International Colour Awards, and the 11th edition of the Pollux Award. His most recent series is included in the 161st Royal Photographic Society exhibition and the 2019 Aesthetica Art Prize at York Art Gallery. Alec von Bargen is also a visual advisor to the Venice Film Festival’s ‘Biennale College Cinema’ and creator of the artist collective The Crema Collective.
