Chung Suejin Biography

While Chung Suejin’s paintings can be easily misunderstood as an expression of allegory, they are an outcome of research and studies that she has invested to create her visual language. A collective of techniques, compositions, forms, and colours build up a scene that involves icons that are portrayed in detail, eccentric composition that is uneasy to grasp, and languages that do not exist in the world.

Chung’s studies on visual expression focus on an experience that people perceive visually, converting the visuals and techniques into her own, the effort for the correct use of line and colour, and creative writing associated with the theme of visual language and artwork. Chung uses web-like visuals as tools to test and evolve a multi-dimensional language.

Ironically, Chung Suejin does not imply or deliver a message of symbolism through her works. Those unrealistic features that fill her canvas do not stand for any specific terms; yet, it allure and suggests the viewers consider these visuals abstract art forms. She continued practicing depicting a scene that successfully well-mixed the lines, planes, and colours until she achieved her goal.

These are the six icons that are consistently featured in Chung Seujin’s work series: static and mundane figures and oeuvres; onion, bread, a bottle of Bacchus (a Korean caffeinated beverage), and walnut; non-existing beings without a reference; and coloured lines that can be assumed as texts. These icons placed on the canvas are to be considered as one of the visual components without any application of symbolism, significance, or narration—as her intention is to share a visual language that does not evoke any kind of sentiment.

Chung Seujin has held solo exhibitions domestically and internationally. She is now based at New York and Seoul. Her works are included in the collections of Korea Art & Cultural Education Service, Seoul, Korea; Doosan Yonkang Foundation Doosan Art Center, Seoul, Korea; Seonhwa Art and Culture Foundation, Seoul, Korea; and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, Korea.
