Karla Marchesi Biography

Karla Marchesi investigates abandoned spaces, discarded objects and destroyed homes, treating them with all the reverence of a traditional still life. These scenes of detritus are translated into objects of contemplation via an intricate realist painting style which explores the abstract qualities of these transitional environments. Marchesi graduated from The Queensland College of Art, Griffith University with a University Medal for academic excellence and the Honours Thesis Prize (Art Theory). Since then, she has exhibited widely at spaces including Heiser Gallery, Brisbane (2008, 2012), Blindside Gallery, Melbourne (2011), Firstdraft, Sydney (2012), The Korea Foundation Cultural Centre, Seoul, Korea (2011) and Kunsthalle M3, Berlin (2013). In 2010 Marchesi was awarded First Prize in the Redland Art Awards and a Career Development Grant, Arts Queensland. More recently, she was awarded the 2012 Wilson Visual Arts Award, and is currently participating in a studio residency at Atelierhaus Mengerzeile, Berlin.
