Kimihiko Hino Biography

A graduate of the Department of Japanese Literature at Nishogakusha University, Hino had envisioned himself involved in creative work since childhood, inspired by his uncleʼs invention of the Epoch Companyʼs Pokapon Game. Intending to pursue linguistics, he enrolled in the Department of Japanese Literature in 1994, however, after casually entering the calligraphy club and encountering Inoue Yuichiʼs conté-drawn calligraphic work Konte mo o wari, the raw power of the words simply written on paper leaving a lasting impression, shifted his focus to calligraphy. Hino spent a year at UNAC Tokyo, working on Yuichi Inoueʼs catalogue raisonné, where he deepened his understanding of the artistʼs practice. His own artistic approach is rooted in the belief that writing is a response to something, and that calligraphy exists only in relation to its specific context.

Hino held his first solo show, memo, in 1996, and among his many thereafter are Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand and Feel It (Donʼt Fight It) at Mitaka City Arts Center in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Group exhibitions include the two-person show New Friends with Hisashi Yamamoto at Gallery G in 2019, and_The World of Contemporary Calligraphy 2: Symbols and the Present_ at Yumiko Chiba Associates in 2020.
