Ai Weiwei Confronts War in Ukraine with Kyiv Exhibition

Renowned artist and activist Ai Weiwei will present a new installation in Kyiv, reflecting on war and political conflict as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues.
The exhibition will open on 14 September at Pavilion 13—a Soviet-era hall built in 1967 originally intended to showcase Soviet industrial achievement—and will run until 30 November.
Ai described the work as not merely an aesthetic statement but a reflection of his position ‘as an individual navigating immense political shifts, international hegemonies, and conflicts’.
The installation, titled Three Perfectly Proportioned Spheres and Camouflage Uniforms Painted White, features three geometrically precise spheres, inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s mathematical studies, encased in white-painted camouflage fabric.
Ai uses the materials to explore notions of concealment, ideological distortion, and the failure of reason and its systems to guarantee peaceful coexistence.
The artist emphasised art’s role in confronting authoritarianism, calling it a means to express deeply rooted human emotions and resistance.
‘You cannot really give every description,’ he said, ‘but you can always suggest a gesture or attitude or some kind of symbolic meaning, more like a poetic gesture.’
